About this game

This chess-like game was developed by the German Wehrmacht as a training aid but became widely popular. Each side gets 18 playing pieces made of bakelite that represent various unit types. The board has black and white squares on an 11 x 11 board. It also has features including a main road, a river, walls and 2 lakes (which block all movement except air).

Rules

The pieces have varied movement powers like chess. Unlike chess, a piece is not captured by moving onto it. Instead, the attacker must threaten it with two other pieces. There are multiple ways to win, including capturing the Hauptfigur (Chess King equivalent), occupying the enemy's territory, or killing all his infantry (pawn equivalents).
