About this game

This classic wargame is still published as Stratego. The first edition was self-published by Mlle Hermance Edan in 1909, and a few years later Gibson in the UK bought English rights and published versions continuously through the mid-1970s. This was the first wargame enabling secret set-up and movement without a referee.

Rules

Each player has 36 playing pieces on metal stands. The name and value of each piece faces the owner, with the back blank. The board is 9 spaces wide by 10 deep, with three impassable "lakes" in mid-board. Players take turns moving a single piece forward, back or sideways. If this ends adjacent vertically to an enemy piece, the player may announce an attack. Both pieces are revealed. Lower value is removed (both if tied). The Spy kills the General. Mines don't move but kill anything that attacks.
