Jeu de Poilus

About this game

This game is a quiet tribute to the "poilus", the ordinary soldiers at the core of the French army. The board itself has only a couple of images of war: attacking French troops across the top, and a cameo of a single tank in the lower left corner. The large gold-lettered label on the deep red back of the board has just the title and an inscription: “Dedicated to the children of France in memory of the Great War”.

Rules

Standard roll and move along a 133-space track. Players start as a private second class, gradually getting promoted through 13 ranks and eventually to Marshal of France. Playing pieces also pass through many of the war’s battles: the First Marne in 1914, Yser, Champagne, Somme, Verdun, and Second Marne in 1918. Along the way, players may win medals or be demoted, and more importantly may be wounded, captured or even killed on the field of honor (which forces the player out of the game).
