Belagerungsspiel (Franco-Prussian)

1880 · Germany · JW Spear & Sohne

Theme: Franco-Prussian War

About this game

This version of Belagerungsspiel is themed on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. While published in victorious Germany, however, it was intended for sale across Europe, with the box cover including the title in German, French, Dutch and Hungarian. It therefore shows French artillery troops in correct uniform firing the guns at the fortress. However, the troops are firing what are clearly Krupp breech-loading siege guns – the very ones recently used against the French in the siege of Paris!
